DCPS is on the rise

SCROLL DOWN

DCPS is on the rise

DC Public Education Fund recently celebrated its 10th year of connecting the philanthropic community with DC Public Schools’ most urgent strategic priorities.

In School Year 2007-2008, we were created to help DC Public Schools usher in the sweeping, systemic changes that have helped earn DCPS a reputation as the strongest national model for urban education transformation. Since that time, our investments have helped shape DC Public Schools into the fastest-improving school system in the nation.

Take a look below to see how we did it.

A NEW ERA BEGINS

DC Public Schools focuses on teacher quality

In 2007, DC Public Schools set human capital as its most important lever to improve student achievement and negotiated a groundbreaking union contract, which enabled DCPS to establish its performance-based culture. Through initial investments in IMPACT, the nation's most rigorous evaluation system, DCPS is able to set and measure high expectations, letting data drive decision-making and providing educators the tools they need to succeed.

DCPS’ performance-based culture prompts a $64.5 million investment

Investments from four national foundations established IMPACTplus, DCPS' performance-based pay system designed to attract and retain top teachers. In 2011, Kaya Henderson was appointed Chancellor and DCPS subsequently launched A Capital Commitment, setting ambitious goals through 2017.

In addition, DC Ed Fund hosts the inaugural Standing Ovation for DC Teachers, honoring DCPS' outstanding educators at an annual awards gala held at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

high-quality academic experiences
across every ward and in every school

Again, DCPS leads the nation in student improvement on the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress, earning distinction as the fastest-improving urban school district in the nation for the second consecutive time.

With multi-million dollar investments from two private foundations, DCPS' Cornerstones curriculum initiative standardizes learning experiences and expectations across all grade levels and subject areas.

Together with Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, DCPS and DC Ed Fund launched the Empowering Males of Color initiative in January 2015, devoting significant resources and attention to accelerating African-American and Latino male student achievement.
